"It was Christmas Eve 1914, and we could see lights coming from the German trenches … they were decorating Christmas trees. As the guns fell silent, the sound of singing could be heard. We recognised Silent Night/Stille Nacht and started trading verses. A spontaneous truce broke out as we put down our weapons and climbed out of the trenches, crossing 'no man's land' to greet one another and exchange souvenirs. It was a Christmas I’ll always remember."
100 years on as the world commemorates the centenary of the First World War, the Christmas Truce of 1914 is remembered as a breakthrough of peace amid such a terrible conflict.
